Thinking of participating in a Co-op?
Some things to consider...
When purchasing through a co-op, products are often available at a considerable savings.
When purchasing through a co-op, products which may not generally be available are frequently offered.
Co-op'd items are sometimes available in smaller quantities than those availble through the manufacturer (ounces instead of kilos, etc).
These sales may encourage vendors to carry new products. Several highly successful co-ops on a particular product can speak volumes to suppliers.
Consider whether the co-op price is really a good deal, in conjunction with the related fees (hostess fees, shipping, etc). The host or hostess may have missed a bargain available somewhere else.
Some co-op'd items may not be available again at the same price point unless through another co-op. Would you be willing to host a co-op in the future in order to have the ingredient or product available at the quantity discount? If not, would you be willing to pay a higher price (or purchase larger quantities) in order to have the product, or do without the product entirely?
If you purchase through a co-op for which the host or hostess does not disclose the source supplier, will you be able to find the same product again? If not, consider that you may have to change formulation or packaging on a popular product.
Co-ops are generally not the best way to get items that you need in a hurry, or by a certain time. If you need an item quickly, or by a specific date, you may want to consider purchasing enough of the item to get you by from one of our many fantastic suppliers - in addition to, or instead of purchasing from the co-op. Products may be available more quickly through a fast buy. However, it is prudent to confirm estimated shipping times with the host or hostess before buying if you are under time constraints.
Read the listing for a co-op which interests you carefully before you decide to participate. Especially, look at the price of the item, the hostess fee, closing and shipping dates, shipping fees, etc. Make sure all details are to your satisfaction before signing up for a co-op. If you have any questions, contact the host or hostess before you sign up.
Keep in mind that the Dish is not responsible for any transaction made or solicited on the forum or the SoapSaver site, nor do we oversee these transactions in any official way. Transactions are the responsibility of those involved all the way through - from initiation to resolution. Buyer or seller, it will be your responsibility to live up to your commitments. State and federal laws still apply.
Consider the reliability of the host or hostess of the co-op. Sending money to a total stranger may not be the best business investment, so be cautious but open to new co-op hosts and hostesses. The most reliable and experienced hosts and hostesses had to start somewhere, but exercising caution is always a good idea.
